Under 14 - no neural slop: expert explained why it is dangerous for children to watch AI-generated videos

At this age, a child still does not have the critical thinking skills to distinguish fake content from reality

Maria Matveeva, an employee of the NSU Institute of Medicine and Medical Technologies, recommended limiting children under 14's access to video content created by neural networks. According to her, at this age children have not yet developed critical thinking and media literacy skills, they cannot always distinguish a fake from reality and are easily influenced by visual images.

The expert emphasized that it is important to monitor the content a child watches, limit the time spent using digital devices, and discuss with children what they have seen, teaching them to analyze information. Also, in her opinion, it is necessary to develop interest in offline activities — sports, reading, creativity — and use parental control applications.

The cause for concern was the so-called "neural slop" — low-quality content mass-generated by artificial intelligence with minimal human involvement for the sake of quick earnings and attracting traffic. Experts link the growth in the amount of such content to the availability of powerful neural networks and the desire of creators to monetize social media algorithms.
