Russia's Largest Manganese Deposit with Ore Content Over 25% Gets New Investor

The Bolshoy Tokmak deposit has enough reserves for 100 years of extraction with the country's annual demand of 1.3 million tons

The Bolshoy Tokmak deposit in the Zaporozhye region contains 1.7 billion tons of manganese ore and is among the top five largest in the world. The metal content exceeds 25%, which significantly surpasses the indicators of Ural facilities. With Russia's current demand of 1.3 million tons of manganese per year (over 90% of the volume is imported), the deposit is capable of producing up to 1.7 million tons annually.

Manganese is critical for metallurgy — it improves the properties of steel and is also used in the production of batteries, the demand for which is steadily growing.

The project involves the construction of a mining and processing plant on a site of 9.5 thousand hectares, creating 3 thousand jobs. Clearing and draining old workings is required, which increases costs. An industry source at "Ъ" estimates the total investment at up to 100 billion rubles. Additional risks are created by shelling in the region, but the high quality of the ore makes the asset strategic.

According to the Unified State Register of Legal Entities (EGRYUL), since April 9, AO Flagman of Mikhail Zhabin has become a co-owner of the development company Reale Inzhenering Invest with a share of 16.74%. Previously, a structure of Rostec received 25.1% in the project.
