The Russian gas carrier Arctic Metagaz, which was damaged in an attack in the Mediterranean Sea, went out of control. The incident was caused by a broken cable connecting the ship to the tug. This happened on the night of April 2 due to extreme weather conditions: the wave height in the area of the incident exceeded seven meters.
Khaled Gulam, an official representative of the Libyan Committee for Emergency Situations, said that in the current situation, neither party is able to predict the drift trajectory of the tanker. Winds and sea currents can carry the ship in any direction, which creates uncertainty for planning a rescue operation.
The Libyan authorities have deployed all available resources to localize the threat and prevent environmental consequences for the coast. A representative of the Emergency Committee stressed that the situation requires coordination of efforts by all Mediterranean states. Each country in the region has technical capabilities that can help bring the ship under control.
Earlier, the Egyptian tugboat Mardave, working under contract with the Libyan National Oil Corporation, towed the damaged tanker for several days. According to the latest data, the ship was approximately 62 nautical miles from the Libyan coast. After the cable broke, Arctic Metagaz continues to drift in the open water area.
On March 9, 2026, Igor Tonkovidov, General Director of Sovcomflot PJSC, stated that the attack on Arctic Metagaz is a gross violation of international maritime law, for which someone will have to answer.
