Lada Azimut engines passed Euro-6 tests at AvtoVAZ's unique test bench

A special climate chamber simulates a driving cycle at temperatures from -30 to +30 degrees

The engines of the new Lada Azimut crossover have successfully passed tests for compliance with the Euro-6 environmental standard, the AvtoVAZ press service reported. The tests were carried out as part of preparations for obtaining state Vehicle Type Approval. Testing and refinement of the toxicity reduction system took place at a specialized stand of the AvtoVAZ scientific and technical center in Togliatti — the equipment allows simulating a driving cycle taking into account the characteristics of a real car in the temperature range from -30 to +30 degrees. Lada Azimut will be the second model of the brand with a Euro-6 certificate — the first was Lada Iskra.

What is Euro-6 and why are the tests more difficult than previous standards

The Euro-6 standard imposes increased requirements on emissions of harmful substances — nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and hydrocarbons. The key difference from previous standards is that tests are carried out at both positive and negative temperatures in a climate chamber. Cold start and engine operation in frost are the most toxic mode for most gasoline engines, it is here that toxicity reduction systems work least effectively.

The AvtoVAZ scientific and technical center's test bench allows reproducing a full driving cycle without going on the road — this speeds up refinement and reduces dependence on weather conditions during certification.

Specifications of Lada Azimut power units at the start of production

  • Engine 1: gasoline, volume 1.6 l, manufacturer — AvtoVAZ
  • Engine 2: gasoline, volume 1.8 l, manufacturer — AvtoVAZ
  • Transmissions: mechanical and automatic
  • Environmental standard: Euro-6
  • Status: tests passed, preparation for obtaining Vehicle Type Approval
  • Test location: AvtoVAZ scientific and technical center, Togliatti
  • Temperature range during tests: from -30 to +30°С

The passage of Euro-6 by Russian engines is a significant technical result against the background of the discussion about the power unit for Azimut. It was previously reported that AvtoVAZ was considering Chinese engines for the crossover — in particular, units from Great Wall Motor and Dongfeng. Starting production with its own 1.6 and 1.8 liter engines means that at the initial stage the plant is betting on domestic power units that already meet current environmental requirements.

Earlier www1.ru reported that AvtoVAZ has put into operation a modern automated line for assembling and balancing wheels. The launch of such equipment is especially important in anticipation of the start of mass production of Lada Azimut.
