Laser Welding for Serial Production of LADA Azimut Crossover Introduced by AvtoVAZ

18 new robots launched in production and welding shop automation brought to 50%

Togliatti's auto giant is actively preparing production for the launch of serial production of the new LADA Azimut crossover. One of the most important areas of modernization of the welding shop was the development of laser welding - a technology not previously used in the practice of AvtoVAZ.

The innovation is directly related to the appearance of a version of the model with a standard panoramic roof and sunroof - an option that was not previously found in LADA production cars. Laser welding is used to connect key elements of the panoramic structure in the most critical areas, ensuring the preservation of the exact geometry of the body. The total length of laser welds is only 18 cm, but these joints are critical: they completely eliminate the risk of leaks, guarantee reliable and smooth operation of the opening/closing mechanisms, and also significantly increase the overall torsional stiffness and strength characteristics of the body.

Equipment for laser welding is fully developed and manufactured by Russian enterprises. The shop staff has already undergone the necessary training, and the process of installing the panoramic roof has been successfully integrated into the existing assembly line. The roof mounting area is equipped with universal equipment that is equally effective for both Azimut bodies and bodies of other current LADA models.

By the time of the official launch of mass production, the level of automation of welding production will approach 50%. The shop has additionally received 18 new industrial robots, as a result of which the total number of robotic complexes has exceeded 150 units.
