At the Vostok station in Antarctica, the lowest air temperature on Earth in the past 24 hours was recorded - minus 55.8 degrees, the Russian Hydrometeorological Center reported.
The second and third places in the world ranking of cold were also taken by Russian settlements. In the Chukotka village of Ilirney, thermometers dropped to minus 52 degrees, and in Yakut Oymyakon - to minus 48.9.
The hottest place on the planet during the same period was Cairo Airport, where the air warmed up to plus 42 degrees. With the same indicator, the city of Beira in Mozambique entered the top three. In Niamey, the capital of Niger, 40.7 degrees Celsius was recorded.
