Russia Moves Towards Building Wooden Skyscrapers

The Ministry of Emergency Situations is finalizing the approval of a new set of rules that will allow the construction of multi-apartment buildings of increased height from glued wood. This opens the way for the mass use of wooden structures not only in individual, but also in social, tourist and even high-rise construction.

The Ministry of Construction confirmed: the current set of rules already allows the construction of multi-story buildings from wood. To launch such projects, municipalities only need to specify the requirement for wooden structures in the design assignment.

However, the industry faces a lack of scientifically based standards for assessing the durability, maintainability and residual life of wooden buildings. This slows down decision-making at the local level.

The price of a wooden house is comparable to similar objects made of aerated concrete or brick. After the house is put into operation, buyers can count on a subsidy of up to 800 thousand rubles, which is 20% of the total cost.

Glued wooden panels do not shrink, provide good sound insulation and microclimate, and also allow construction to be carried out all year round. A three-story house according to a standard design can be assembled in three weeks. In case of fire, damaged elements are easily replaced without complete reconstruction of the building.
