The Head of the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport (Rosmorrechflot), Andrey Tarasenko, visited the Vyborg Shipyard, which is part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), to inspect the construction progress of the new linear diesel-electric icebreaker "Vyborg" with a capacity of 18 MW. The vessel, developed under Project 21900M2 and classified as Icebreaker7 ice class, is designed to ensure navigation in the ports of the North-Western maritime basin.
Particular attention is paid to import substitution: a completely Russian set of propulsion equipment, including diesel generators and azimuth thrusters, will be used when equipping the "Vyborg". After completion of construction and passing all tests, the vessel is scheduled to be transferred to the North-Western Basin Branch of FSUE "Rosmorport" at the end of 2028.
It is noted that three icebreakers of Project 21900M — "Vladivostok", "Novorossiysk" and "Murmansk" — have already been built and successfully operated at the same enterprise. These vessels provide year-round navigation in the Arctic and the Far East, confirming the high efficiency of domestic technologies in difficult ice conditions.
Some technical characteristics of the vessel:
power — 18 MW;
ice class — Icebreaker7;
speed in clear water — more than 17 knots;
endurance — 40 days;
can continuously overcome a solid ice field up to 1.5 m thick;
crew — 35 people, it is possible to accommodate up to 22 special personnel;
helicopter pad — provides the possibility of landing heavy helicopters of the "Ka-32" and "Mi-8" type.
