Under the Moskva River and Yauza: Modernization of Underwater Gas Pipelines Completed in the Capital

Sobyanin: Trenchless Technologies Used in Infrastructure Upgrade

Employees of Mosgaz have completed a complex engineering program to modernize underwater gas pipelines (ducts). This was announced by the Mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin.

Underwater gas pipeline laying scheme

Work began in 2018, covering 12 high and medium pressure gas pipelines. The total length of the ducts, which were created between 1939 and 1965 under the Moskva River, Yauza River and other water obstacles, was almost 9 km. The reconstruction of the last object - the Kropotkinsky gas pipeline - was completed at the end of December 2025.

When upgrading the infrastructure, workers used modern trenchless technologies. The pipes were laid at a depth of about 20 m below the bottom of the rivers.

All updated gas pipelines received a triple protective shell and automated shut-off devices.
Sergei Sobyanin, Mayor of Moscow

If necessary, the Mosgaz dispatch service can remotely shut off the gas supply, Sobyanin summarized.
