Belarus intends to prepare a framework agreement with the state corporation Rosatom in 2026 and conclude an intergovernmental agreement with Russia on the construction of the third power unit of the Belarusian NPP. This was announced by the Minister of Energy of the country, Denis Moroz.
According to the minister, to implement the project, it is necessary to prepare a package of documents that will include the technical and economic conditions of construction. For this purpose, a working group has been created at the level of the ministry and Rosatom, which has already held several meetings. In the coming months, it is planned to prepare a framework agreement and a detailed action plan for all state bodies for the construction of the third unit.
The Belarusian NPP in Ostrovets, Grodno region, currently has two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2.4 thousand MW. The first power unit was put into commercial operation in June 2021, the second in November 2023. The commissioning of the third unit is planned for the period 2035-2038.
