Around 50 thousand: Alikhanov assessed the production of freight cars in Russia in 2025

The volume is below the industry's capabilities, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said

In Russia, in 2025, the production of new freight cars will amount to 45-50 thousand units, said the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Anton Alikhanov in an interview with RIA Novosti. He noted that the existing capacities allow producing up to 80 thousand cars annually, however, the actual volume in 2025 will be lower.

According to Rosstat, in January-November 2025, the production of freight cars decreased by 29.2% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 48.4 thousand units. Passenger cars for the same period decreased by 17%, amounting to 1,217 units.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is considering the possibility of introducing a trade-in mechanism for the purchase of innovative gondola cars with an increased axle load of up to 25 tons. The implementation of this measure will depend on budgetary capabilities.

Earlier, Deputy General Director of Russian Railways Mikhail Glazkov noted that the holding has "extra" 400 thousand cars, and the arrival of new rolling stock on the network is twice the write-off of the old one.
