From "Geran" to "Banderol": Russia Is Developing a Line of "Light Cruise Missiles"

An expert explained why the new missiles will become even cheaper and more accessible for mass use

Missile designer and author of the Telegram channel "Russkii inzhener," Aleksandr Vasiliev, said that the Geran strike UAV is essentially a "light cruise missile." According to him, the overwhelming majority of this aircraft's components are produced in Russia.

The design uses a minimal number of imported components, among which there are no critically important items capable of creating vulnerability in the event of possible supply restrictions.

Of particular interest, in the expert's opinion, is the current production cooperation and the possibilities for scaling. In the very near future, new weapons systems are expected to appear, including the development of the Banderol project — a simple, cheap, and mass-produced jet missile which, it is claimed, surpasses Geran in effectiveness. At the same time, its production can be established at already existing manufacturing facilities without significant additional costs.

Let us recall that, according to specifications from open sources, the flight range of Banderol is 500 km, and the munition carries a 150-kg OFBCh-150 high-explosive fragmentation warhead. The missile's carriers are Orion UAVs, with the prospect of integration on Mi-28N helicopters.
