Christmas Mood Thieves: Experts Explain How Scammers Try to Deceive Russians Before the Holiday

Criminals Pose as Santa Claus and Snow Maiden

Residents of Russia are warned about possible New Year's fraud schemes. Attackers use the New Year's theme to deceive citizens, creating fake websites offering discounts, as well as fake postcards and greetings via messengers. This was reported by the press service of the "Moshelovka" platform of the People's Front.

Fraudsters often hide behind Santa Claus and Snow Maiden, creating fraudulent platforms or complaints about animators' services. They offer the cost of services significantly lower than the market price, and after making an advance payment, they disappear, leaving children without a holiday.

Fake websites with New Year's sales are also becoming popular. On such platforms, you can see attractive offers from well-known brands, but in fact these are clone sites. The goal of the attackers is to steal payment data or receive prepayment for a non-existent product. Phishing emails are actively used in this process, as well as advertising created using generative AI.

Scammers also send links to interactive New Year's cards. Clicking on them may lead to the installation of ransomware.
