The restoration of a rare example of Soviet aviation technology continues in the USA — the MiG-21UM combat trainer. During recent ground tests on the runway, the aircraft demonstrated the operation of its R-11-300 turbojet engine for the first time after a long break during a high-speed run.
This particular MiG-21UM was previously in service with the Czechoslovak Air Force and bore tail number 3046. After the country's dissolution, it changed several owners until it ended up in the hands of American enthusiasts who decided to return the machine to flight condition.
Particular attention was drawn to the video in which the MiG "competes" with a Ford F-150 pickup truck while checking engine thrust. Despite its venerable age, the jet fighter confidently leaves even a powerful car behind, demonstrating the remaining power of its "steel heart."
The restoration project is of interest to both aviation historians and collectors of military equipment. According to preliminary estimates, the machine will soon make a full flight — for the first time in decades.
