The program to modernize Soviet T-72 tanks in the Czech Republic ended in a resounding failure due to insurmountable technical difficulties. Key electronic components of the vehicles could not be restored.
Tests revealed problems with shooting accuracy and the fire control system. A full restoration of the tanks would require huge additional investments in a new fire control system for the outdated platform, which is economically impractical.
It is worth noting that the Czech Republic has about 30 T-72 series tanks, which were transferred back in the days of the USSR.
Meanwhile, the Uralvagonzavod concern (part of the Rostec Group) successfully implemented a program to upgrade the T-72 to the T-72B3M, and some samples are even dated 2024.
The upper frontal part of the hull of combat vehicles received elements of dynamic protection (ERA) 4S23 \"Relikt\", which increased the equivalent resistance from kinetic projectiles from 650 to 720 mm and from cumulative ones - about 1100-1200 mm.
Thanks to its well-designed protection, the T-72B3M demonstrates miracles of survivability and can withstand hits from even 24 drones.
