The Director General of the Rosatom State Corporation, Alexey Likhachev, signed the order "On the organization of work on the construction of power units No. 1 and 2 of the Kola NPP-2 with an installed capacity of 1200 MW." The document was received by the management of the Kola NPP (located near the city of Polyarnye Zori in the Murmansk region).
The order specifies the timing for the development of technical documentation and construction of the new nuclear facility, as well as the distribution of roles between the organizations participating in the project. Thus, power units No. 1 and No. 2 with a capacity of 600 MW each are planned to be built between 2027 and 2037. The construction of two more units will begin later.
Kola NPP-2 will be the first station with the latest water-cooled power reactors with spectral regulation (VVER-S). This type of reactor can operate in a closed nuclear fuel cycle with uranium-plutonium fuel.
How much does the Kola NPP-2 project cost?
The construction of a new nuclear power plant in the Murmansk region will require investments of more than 1.5 trillion rubles. According to data from the collection "Arctic in Figures - 2025", prepared with the participation of members of the State Council Commission of the Russian Federation on the "Northern Sea Route and the Arctic" direction, Kola NPP-2 will provide energy to the Murmansk region and Karelia for the next 100 years.
