The Earth has faced the third magnetic storm this month, according to the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute for Space Research (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The cause was a stream of plasma from a coronal hole on the Sun, which has been affecting near-Earth space in recent days.
Earlier, experts noted rapid changes in the parameters of the solar wind, including an increase in its speed, which indicated the approach of the main plasma wave. The impact on Earth is assessed as moderate: strong magnetic storms are not expected, but short-term disturbances of a weak level are likely.
The wait was short... The third magnetic storm of October has begun
According to the forecast, the geomagnetic situation will completely stabilize by midday on October 20, after which a lull is expected for about a week.
Two magnetic storms have already been recorded in October: from October 1 to 3 and on October 12. International practice shows that even moderate disturbances can affect the operation of satellites, navigation systems, and radio communications, and intensify the Northern Lights at high latitudes.
