Electrical Equipment for the "Leningrad" Nuclear Icebreaker Approved in Russia

Tests have shown that the electrical equipment is capable of operating under extreme loads

The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (Register, RS) has approved key electrical equipment for the universal nuclear icebreaker "Leningrad" of Project 22220, the institution's press service reported.

In the context of Project 22220 nuclear icebreakers, the main switchboard is not just a control panel, but a complex intelligent system on which the vessel's viability and the fulfillment of tasks in the harsh Arctic conditions depend.

The equipment was tested at the Krylov State Research Center. Experts checked the electrical strength and insulation resistance, the reliability of the protection relays, and the functioning of the device cells.

The electrical equipment is capable of operating under extreme loads and allows maintaining a reliable power supply to three propulsion electric motors with a total capacity of ~60 MW.

The specifics of the electric propulsion systems of Project 22220 make the increased reliability of the MSB the basis of the vessel's energy stability. By providing energy reception and distribution, network protection, and centralized control, the MSB guarantees uninterrupted power supply to all ship systems.
