Turkey is preparing to commission the first power unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in 2026, according to the country's Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar.

To meet Turkey's growing energy needs, at least 12 large reactors and the introduction of small modular units are needed.

Akkuyu NPP will be a historic project for the country, built according to the Russian VVER generation III+ design. Each of the station's four power units will have a capacity of 1,200 MW.

Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced plans to launch the first reactor of the Akkuyu NPP in 2026.
