The head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Maksut Shadaev, said that 65 personal data leaks have been registered in the country since the beginning of the year, which is significantly less compared to the same period last year, when their number reached 135.
I don’t know if the current leak figures are the result of this law or just a coincidence. But we have data from Roskomnadzor. These are officially registered major leaks of personal data. Last year there were about 135. And now we have, I’m afraid to jinx it, but now we have 65.
The minister expressed hope that no global new leaks would occur in the remaining time until the end of the year, and added that in this sense, everything is going relatively well compared to last year. Shadaev noted that cybersecurity spending continues to grow, despite the difficult economic situation.
He also touched upon the topic of the new law, which introduces liability for companies for personal data leaks. He noted that the introduction of turnover fines is aimed at motivating companies to increase the level of information protection.
The law, which strengthens administrative liability for personal data leaks and introduces turnover fines for repeated violations, came into force on May 30.
