Tens of Billions of Rubles Will Be Needed: Modernization of "Severnaya Verf" in Question — the Crooked Dam Interferes

The artificial island of Krivaya Damba is located in the port area

The United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) and "Severnaya Verf" intend to implement a large-scale expansion. But a serious obstacle has arisen in their path — the artificial island of Krivaya Damba, located in the port area.

In the center of the Big Port of St. Petersburg is the artificial island of Krivaya Damba, which is not inhabited. It appeared as a result of land reclamation work carried out during the construction of the port in the 1870s.

Eliminating the obstacle will require about ten billion rubles, as well as the disposal of soil contaminated with oil products.

The corporation expects that after the reconstruction, for which it is planned to allocate at least 300 billion rubles, the shipyard will be able to build ships up to 350 meters long.

However, the disposal of contaminated soil is a difficult task. It has not yet been revealed how the island will be excluded from the general plan.

The best way to solve this issue from a hydrological point of view is being determined. When it is ready, we will announce it. We are having a discussion with the city, we are actively conducting it, everyone understands that we will need to resolve the issue of the Crooked Dam, but the matter is now with the specialists.

Additional difficulties arise from the fact that the rights to use Krivaya Damba belong to JSC "Sea Port of St. Petersburg" until December 2046. This means that any attempts to demolish it will depend on the need for negotiations, the redemption of rights or compensation, or we will have to wait for the end of the lease term.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that USC is designing a new shipyard on the basis of "Severnaya Verf".
