Instead of a landfill: Uralvagonzavod decided to turn T-72 tanks into BMPTs

To do this, the tanks need to have their turrets removed and the chassis equipped with a transition ring

Specialists from the Ural Design Bureau of Transport Engineering (part of the Uralvagonzavod concern of the Rostec State Corporation) have developed a new method for modernizing the chassis of T-72 and T-90 tanks. New tank support fighting vehicles (BMPT) will be created on its base.

BMPT "Terminator"

The essence of the modernization is to equip the tank chassis with a transition ring for mating the hull with the installed BMPT combat module after removing the turret with the gun.

Also, boxes of portable spare parts, equipment for collecting links of automatic gun belts and a machine gun will be added to the equipment.

Thanks to the new method, the labor intensity of creating BMPTs will be reduced by using the chassis of existing tanks. In addition to replacing the tank turret with a combat module and replacing some of the components with new ones, minimal modification will be required for the remaining equipment.
