Nuclear Fuel "Melt Trap" Delivered to Construction Site of Power Unit No. 3 with VVER-1200 Reactor of Leningrad NPP-2

A heavy crawler crane with a lifting capacity of 2,000 tons will be used to install the equipment

The first large-sized equipment for the construction of power unit No. 3 of the Leningrad NPP-2 has been delivered to Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad Region. The core melt localization device is one of the passive safety systems of the nuclear power plant. The "melt trap" and its elements arrived from the city of Syzran, from the production site of Tyazhmash JSC.

Transportation of cargo with a total weight of more than 730 tons was carried out by water using a Russian vessel
We have received unique equipment that provides the highest level of safety for power units with water-cooled power reactors. An advanced domestic technology that completely eliminates the release of radioactive substances and ionizing radiation outside the reactor building in any operating mode of the unit.
Vladimir PeregudaDirector of the Leningrad NPP

The transportation of cargo with a total weight of more than 730 tons was carried out by water using a Russian vessel. This logistical solution made it possible to carry out transportation quickly, safely and economically efficiently. The "melt trap" was carefully and accurately transported along the Volga, Kuibyshev and Rybinsk reservoirs, the White, Onega and Ladoga lakes, as well as along the Neva and the Gulf of Finland. In total, the equipment traveled over 2,000 kilometers.

In the near future, an incoming inspection of the "melt trap" body and all related elements, including service platforms, a cantilever arm, a lower plate and water supply valves, will be carried out to confirm the high quality of manufacture. After that, specialists from the general contractor of the Titan-2 holding will begin installing the "melt trap" in its regular place - the reactor shaft of power unit No. 3 with the VVER-1200 reactor of Leningrad NPP-2. A heavy crawler crane with a lifting capacity of 2,000 tons will be used to perform this key operation. Installation is scheduled for November this year.

The core melt localization device is a "know-how" of the domestic nuclear industry, one of the passive safety systems of the VVER-1200 generation 3+ project. In the event of a hypothetical accident with melting of the active zone, the "trap", filled with a special "sacrificial material" that will reliably hold the entire highly radioactive fuel melt inside until complete cooling and crystallization, excluding its contact with the environment.

Earlier www1.ru reported that Rosatom will build a small and large nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan on the same site.
