First Tram Line Without Overhead Contact System Opens in Moscow

New route on Academician Sakharov Avenue will improve transport links for 300,000 Muscovites

The first tram line in Russia that operates without an overhead contact system has opened on Academician Sakharov Avenue in Moscow. This was announced by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

Many residents of the capital have been waiting for this. Academician Sakharov Avenue and Masha Poryvaeva Street are among the few main streets that did not have public transport.

According to him, this event is a significant step in the revival of tram infrastructure in the capital in recent years.

Now, tram route number 90 has appeared in the capital. It connects Sokolniki with Paveletsky railway station, and 20 stations of the rail network are now accessible. The Mayor of Moscow emphasized that 300,000 people can now take advantage of more convenient travel options.

It will now be faster to get from the area of three railway stations to Paveletsky railway station by tram than by metro.

About 20 «Львёнок-Москва» trams with autonomous running will operate on route No. 90. The interval of movement will be approximately 5 minutes. The trams will be able to travel two kilometers along Academician Sakharov Avenue without connecting to the overhead contact system, as energy is accumulated on other sections of the route. Thanks to the introduction of «Львят», it is planned to complete the renewal of the Moscow tram fleet by the end of 2026.
