Peaceful Atom Still Peaceful: Kursk NPP Did Not Receive Significant Damage

The radiation background at the industrial site of the station and in the surrounding area remains normal

An unmanned aerial vehicle was shot down by air defense forces in the area of the Kursk nuclear power plant on the night of August 24. As a result of the fall and detonation of the warhead, a transformer was damaged. There were no casualties, and the radiation background is normal.

The incident occurred at 00:26 Moscow time. When the downed drone fell, a detonation occurred, which damaged the station's own needs transformer. The resulting local fire was quickly extinguished by fire departments.

As a result of the incident, power unit No. 3 of the Kursk NPP was unloaded to 50% of its capacity. At the time of the incident, three power units were in operation at the station, one was under scheduled maintenance, and two more were operating in non-generation mode.

The radiation background at the industrial site of the Kursk NPP and in the surrounding area has not changed. Its values correspond to natural background indicators. The station continues to operate normally.
