Lada Iskra assembly in St. Petersburg suspended

The car will be assembled in Togliatti due to a shortage of components

The Lada Iskra SW Cross assembly project at the former Nissan plant in St. Petersburg has been suspended, according to insiders. It is being reviewed as part of a reduction in unpromising programs.

The main reasons for stopping the assembly are the shortage of components — even in Togliatti, the full assembly of Lada Iska is still difficult — and economic logic — if parts are available, it is more profitable to centralize the production of all Iskra modifications on one assembly line in Togliatti than to distribute production across sites.

It is worth recalling that a welding shop was prepared in St. Petersburg and several test bodies were assembled. Work has been suspended and staff have been transferred to a four-day working week.

Earlier, on June 19, the head of AvtoVAZ, Maxim Sokolov, announced plans to launch production in St. Petersburg, noting that this would help preserve a qualified team and support domestic suppliers.
