Rosatom prepares to launch the first unit of Kursk NPP-2

The unit with a VVER-TOI reactor with a capacity of 1255 MW will replace the decommissioned second power unit

Rosatom State Corporation expects to receive permission in the coming weeks to begin commissioning work on the first power unit of Kursk NPP-2, said Director General Alexey Likhachev. The plan is to prepare for the physical start-up and bring the unit to its design capacity.

Construction of the unit began in April 2018. It is based on a VVER-TOI reactor with a capacity of 1255 MW. The building structure is designed to be stable when heavy objects fall, including aircraft weighing up to 400 tons. The reactor is equipped with autonomous power and water supply sources, which allows it to maintain operation in the event of loss of external connections.

The commissioning of this unit will compensate for the cessation of production of the second power unit of the Kursk NPP, which was stopped in January 2024.
