Magnetic storms are near: coronal hole on the Sun has increased by 50%

Increase in solar wind speed is expected on August 18

A rapid growth of a large coronal hole has been recorded on the side of the Sun facing the Earth, with its area increasing by approximately 50% in 24 hours. This was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute for Space Research (IKI) and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISZF) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

A strong darkening is currently being recorded not only in the upper but also in the lower layers of the solar atmosphere, which indicates the formation of a particularly dense flow of solar wind.

According to the forecast, the increase in solar wind speed will begin on August 18 and may reach 800-900 km/s by August 19-20, which is 2-2.5 times higher than usual. However, until then, including the upcoming weekend, the Earth's magnetic field is expected to remain calm.

An increase in solar wind speed may affect the Earth's magnetosphere, but at the moment, it is expected that the activity of the magnetic field will not cause significant geomagnetic storms. Scientists continue to monitor the situation and warn of possible changes in solar activity.
