Big and Small NPP Construction: Iran Interested in Small Modular Reactors from Rosatom

Russia is already building the Bushehr NPP in Iran, but the completion is slow - the country has a payment problem

Russia has started negotiations with Iran on the construction of small modular NPPs on its territory. Rosatom hopes to conclude relevant agreements in the future, said the head of the state corporation, Alexey Likhachev.

He recalled that in early 2025, Iran proposed that Russia expand the agenda of cooperation in nuclear energy, including the construction of small modular NPPs in the republic in the discussion.

Such negotiations are underway. I hope that sooner or later such agreements will be concluded.

Likhachev recalled that Russia has always been an active participant in the process of resolving the so-called Iranian nuclear problem, maintaining a key role in technical and diplomatic support to Tehran.

Likhachev added that Russia already has one large NPP project in Iran - Bushehr. Its first power unit with a capacity of 1000 MW was transferred to the Iranian customer in 2013.

In 2016, the construction of the second stage began, power units II and III with a total of 2.1 thousand MW. Work on power unit II was planned to be completed in 2024, on power unit III - in 2026.

At the beginning of the year, Russian President Vladimir Putin, after meeting with his Iranian counterpart, said that the construction deadlines for new power units at the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran may be adjusted due to payment difficulties.
