Obscene language is to be blocked on the Internet

State Duma deputies proposed restricting the display of materials with obscene vocabulary on social networks and digital platforms

State Duma deputies have developed a bill to block materials with obscene vocabulary on digital platforms and social networks. The initiator of this document was Andrey Svintsov, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Information Policy.

The explanatory note states that content with profanity is not currently subject to blocking. The developed bill should eliminate this problem. If the bill is adopted, the authors of materials with obscene vocabulary will be required to take measures to mask obscene words or delete them before publishing content. This refers to re-editing videos or using sound signals – beeping out obscene words.

The new bill could significantly change the rules for publishing content on the Internet. If it is adopted, it will affect many authors and content creators who use profanity.
