Specialists from the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) have developed a fundamentally new approach to aircraft control, which reduces the reaction time of the aircraft to the pilot's actions. The technology is based on replacing the traditional method of measuring the movement of the control stick.
Evgeny Efremov, Associate Professor at MAI, explained that modern aircraft with digital control systems are equipped with complex algorithms, which cause the aircraft to react to the pilot's actions with a delay. This phenomenon is called equivalent lag.
Most airliners react to how far the pilot has moved the side stick or steering wheel. The system waits for the control to lock in the desired position, which leads to response delays of fractions of a second.
The development proposes measuring not the distance of the stick deflection, but the force applied to it. The control system registers the pilot's force on the stick as soon as it appears, which increases piloting safety and reduces the machine's response delay by 30-40%.
The greater the reaction delay, the greater the workload on the crew, which exacerbates the situation in critical situations. The development reduces risks and improves flight safety.
