Cars Older Than 30 Years May Start Being Disposed of in Russia

Restrictions on the service life of cars are already being considered

In Russia, the possibility of introducing restrictions on the operation of passenger cars older than 30 years is being considered. Such an age mark is already mentioned in the current GOST, which defines rare and classic vehicles.

The concept of compulsory limitation of the service life of cars is not new. It was first announced in 2013, when the Ministry of Industry and Trade proposed limiting the service life of light-duty commercial vehicles, such as Gazelles, to seven years. Later, a similar proposal came from the State Duma Committee on Industry, but it did not receive further development.

In 2021, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Denis Manturov, raised this issue again, noting that such an initiative could revitalize the Russian market. If a new restriction is adopted, owners of cars older than 30 years will be required to either dispose of their cars or undergo a paid examination to confirm the status of a classic or rare car, which will allow them to continue using them.
