Russia's First Carbon Farm to Reduce CO₂ Emissions to Be Built in Sakhalin

The facility will be located in Aniva Bay near the city of Korsakov

The first marine carbon farm in Russia will be created in the Sakhalin Region by the end of 2025. The facility will be located in Aniva Bay near the city of Korsakov, said Alexey Ognev, Vice-Rector of Sakhalin State University, at the Islands of Sustainable Development forum.

The farm will grow algae that can effectively absorb greenhouse gases. At the same time, scientific monitoring of carbon dioxide sequestration processes will be carried out. An aquatic area has already been prepared for this project, and the placement of experimental equipment has begun.

This is important because marine carbon farms open up new opportunities for combating climate change. They help reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and can become part of the carbon market — a system for trading carbon units that is currently being formed in Russia.
