The modernization and repair of the only Russian heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser "Admiral Kuznetsov" of Project 1143.5 has been suspended. According to media reports, the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC, part of Rostec) and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation will decide on the feasibility of returning the ship to service.
The publication "Technosphere Russia" cited arguments in favor of the point of view on maintaining the "Kuznetsov" in working condition.
The main one is strategic necessity. The document "Fundamentals of State Policy in the Field of Naval Activities until 2030" assumes the presence of aircraft carrier formations in the Pacific and Northern Fleets.
Many experts believe that the fleet operating in remote areas of the World Ocean is critically in need of air cover, which cannot be provided by coastal aviation alone.
The accumulated combat experience is already important — the air group of "Admiral Kuznetsov" successfully performed tasks in Syria in 2016-2017, making more than 400 sorties. There is also a replacement for the Su-33s that have exhausted their potential — the live deck-based MiG-29Ks built in the 2010s.
In addition, the experience of operating an aircraft carrier is valuable for designing future Russian aircraft carriers.
