Yakutia to get Russia's first small-scale nuclear power plant

The project based on the RITM-200N reactor unit will become a pilot for remote areas

A small-scale nuclear power plant (SSNPP) will start operating in the Ust-Yansky district of Yakutia by 2031. The project is being implemented within the framework of the Far Eastern concession model and will become the first such facility in Russia. Engineering surveys, seismic and geo-monitoring works will begin in 2024, and the first concrete is scheduled to be poured by 2027.

The plant will be built on the basis of the RITM-200N reactor unit, designed for many years of operation without refueling. It is adapted to the extreme climatic and seismic conditions of the Arctic.

The SSNPP will cover the needs of the Kyuchus gold deposit and settlements of the Ust-Yansky district. The project has passed all the necessary examinations, including environmental and ethnological ones, taking into account the opinion of the indigenous peoples of the North.

The project is expected to give impetus to the socio-economic development of the region, create hundreds of jobs, reduce electricity tariffs, reduce CO₂ emissions and improve transport infrastructure.
