Marketplace banks will be able to compete with traditional banks in terms of the number of active retail customers. So far, they do not pose a threat, but in the future they may be included in the list of systemically important financial organizations, Dmitry Pyanov, First Deputy Chairman of VTB, said on the eve of the SPIEF.
We see that now such banks make a significant contribution to the increase in "multi-banking". They will be able to compete with large banks, such as VTB, Sber, T-Bank and Alfa, in terms of the number of active retail customers. And a large number of active customers implies a significant number of transactions. Discounts on marketplaces "tie" people to their own banks, and it is difficult for traditional banks to compete for such transactions, despite the fact that we are also present when choosing a payment method.
Pyanov said that he does not yet know whether marketplace banks will be able to become full-fledged financial organizations with a wide range of services, like traditional banks.
Now even an ordinary salary bank and a marketplace transaction bank differ dramatically in terms of the amount of customer funds. So far, fintechs do not pose a threat to the traditional banking sector.
Pyanov emphasized that an important factor has appeared in the Bank of Russia's new consultative report on systemic importance criteria — an active customer base. Therefore, he admits that Ozon and Wildberries banks may be included in the list of systemically important ones as early as 2026–2027.
Earlier, T-bank added two new functions to the mobile application: the "Shopping" meta-marketplace and a social network for customer communication. The "City" section now includes a shopping service where users can browse products through a single platform.
