The Bank of Russia warns Russians about the risks of using crypto exchanges, online casinos and other illegal Internet platforms. A person may unknowingly become an actual participant in settlements with criminals.
The Bank of Russia draws attention to a popular scheme of settlements with citizens, which is used on the Internet by shadow businesses: crypto exchanges, online casinos and other illegal Internet platforms. The scheme assumes that its organizers directly bring together citizens for settlements - consumers of illegal services and participants in criminal activities - to mask illegal payments.
For example, if a person buys cryptocurrency in an illegal exchange office via the Internet, the payment organizer selects similar offers from sellers for the same amount. These sellers may be involved in financing terrorism or other crimes. Cryptocurrency is often used for such purposes.
The Bank of Russia warns: transferring fiat money directly to the seller's card in illegal crypto exchanges may become a source of financing for criminal activity.
Players of illegal online casinos are also at risk. For example, when they withdraw money to a card, they are sure that these are payments from the casino. But in fact, the card number is transferred to drug buyers, and they are the ones who transfer funds to the player. Thus, the player unwittingly becomes a participant in settlements for the purchase of prohibited substances.
Earlier, the attackers came up with a new fraud scheme. They call Russians, posing as employees of the Central Bank, and offer to close an "international account" for transferring a large sum of money.
