Domestic 5G satellite communication system tested for the first time in Russia

Tests were conducted in the Tomsk region using a flying laboratory to control drones

The Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects (FPI) announced that the first tests of a demonstrator of a fifth-generation 5G satellite communication system were completed in the Tomsk region in May. The tests were conducted by Telecom-Project-5 and became an important step towards the introduction of domestic 5G technology.

During the tests, a TВС-2МS aircraft was used, which acted as a flying laboratory, simulating the operation of a satellite. An communication line was tested on board the aircraft, allowing simultaneous control of five drones. This was made possible by stable reception and transmission of signals from the laboratory to ground subscriber terminals, which simulated 5G phones.

The ground observation and control point provided a feeder data transmission line, control and management of the 5G communication system and drones with its help in the tests

One of the key features of the Russian 5G airborne equipment is a multi-beam antenna with a phased array antenna. The technology allows creating stationary service areas for subscribers, controlled by digital beams. Such innovations open up new horizons for the implementation of comprehensive 5G communication technology in Russian low-orbit satellite constellations.
