A powerful flare, close to the maximum class X, occurred on the Sun. This was reported by the Institute of Applied Geophysics.
According to the institute, an M9.0 class flare (coordinates S14E73) with a duration of 28 minutes was recorded in the X-ray range at 19:30 Moscow time. On the same day, two more class M flares and one class X flare were recorded.
Solar flares are divided into classes A, B, C, M, and X, depending on the power of X-ray radiation. Each subsequent class is 10 times more powerful than the previous one. Flares can be accompanied by ejections of solar plasma, which, when reaching Earth, causes magnetic storms.
Solar activity has been increasing in recent months, which corresponds to the expected increase in activity within the 11-year solar cycle. Scientists predict an increase in the number of such flares in the coming years.
