In the Transbaikal Territory, an An-26 "Cyclone" cloud seeding aircraft, capable of inducing artificial precipitation, was deployed to combat forest fires, the regional government's press service reported.
The situation in Transbaikalia remains critical. No precipitation is forecast until the end of May, and air temperatures may reach 25–30 degrees Celsius. Strong winds exacerbate the fire situation.
As of the morning of May 23, 25 active forest fires were recorded in the region. They are occurring in districts such as Karymsky, Petrovsk-Zabaykalsky, Tungokochensky, Uletovsky, Khiloksky, Chernyshevsky, Chitinsky, and Shilkinsky.
More than 1,700 people and over 230 units of special equipment are involved in extinguishing the fire. Transbaikalia is also being assisted by more than 1,000 parachutists and paratroopers from the federal Avialesookhrana.
The Transbaikal Territory has been the most fire-affected region in the country for over a month. As of the end of April, it accounted for 99% of Russia's natural fires by area, and more than 60% by the number of fires. The situation requires urgent action, and the authorities are doing everything possible to protect forests and settlements from fire.
