A unique technique was developed at MAI

Russian engineers from the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) have developed a way to extend the operating time of solid-propellant rocket engines needed for long-range space flights.

This effect was achieved by changing the shape of the solid fuel. Specialists have created a mathematical model that performs geometric design of the solid fuel charge, calculates the operating characteristics of the engine with the resulting shape, and also checks the derived combustion law for compliance with the specified conditions.

In the future, the developers intend to expand the functionality of the mathematical model, which will make it possible to calculate the optimal design of the engine and its components.

Solid-propellant engines can be used to accelerate spacecraft, as aircraft take-off accelerators, to divert spent stages and fairings from the trajectory of a launch vehicle, and to launch massive drones. As a working substance, they use a homogeneous dense mixture that provides long, even and continuous combustion.
