Russian UAV Shot Down an F-16 for the First Time?

Military Analyst Fedorov: Geran Strike Drone Exploded Near F-16

The Russian Geran-2 kamikaze drone may have caused the destruction of an F-16 fighter for the first time in history, according to military blogger and analyst Kirill Fedorov.

The pilot clumsily piloted the F-16, and the struck drone exploded too close. That is, formally, the Geran shot down the fighter.

Retired Major General Vladimir Popov noted that the Russian Armed Forces have two dozen drones that could destroy fighters. At the same time, the modernized model of the Geran with a jet engine can reach speeds of around 600 km/h.

In addition, the Gerans have begun flying at higher altitudes — from 2000 to 2500 meters — and forming groups of up to 20 drones for simultaneous attacks on targets.

Operating at such altitudes makes the Gerans inaccessible to anti-aircraft guns and a number of missile systems. When approaching a target, the Gerans dive sharply at high speed to hit the object.
