Russian T-80BVM main battle tanks have been equipped with the latest "Arena-M" active protection system for the first time, in addition to the already traditional passive protection measures (anti-drone screens and nets). This system was previously only seen on the latest modifications of the T-90M "Proryv" and mass-produced versions of the T-72B3M.
The system is capable of intercepting drones, high-speed anti-tank missiles (ATGMs), and rocket-propelled grenades as they approach the tank. In addition, the tanks are being upgraded with improved sighting and navigation equipment, as well as communications equipment.
The T-80BVM tank is equipped with a GTD-1250 gas turbine engine with a power of 1250 hp. It gives the vehicle a high power-to-weight ratio, and during modernization, it undergoes repair and maintenance, extending its service life.
The "Arena-M" includes a radar station (RLS) with high noise immunity, special ammunition in shafts around the perimeter of the tank turret, and an onboard computer.
The radar detects an enemy projectile, anti-tank missile, or grenade aimed at the tank, calculates its trajectory, and fires a protective munition that destroys the target in flight with a beam of striking elements.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that the latest counter-battery radar based on the Tigr-M armored vehicle has been developed in Russia.
