The Russian car market continues to renew, but the pace of this process remains slow. In the first four months of 2025, 349 thousand new passenger cars were sold in the country. Of them, 82.6% are cars manufactured in the previous year, with only 17.4% of cars sold being new products of 2025. Thus, this year has become the most "lagging" in the last two decades.
The main reason for this situation is the large stocks of cars from previous years held by dealers and distributors, which are comparable to the levels of 2009 . Despite this, the number of cars from previous years in warehouses has approximately halved. The total volume of stocks remains at the level of the end of 2024 thanks to the arrival of new models.
The share of 2025 cars in sales is gradually increasing: in January it was only 1%, in February — 8%, in March — 24%, and in April it reached 34%. Experts emphasize that after analyzing the data on production, it will be possible to more accurately assess the dynamics of stocks for April. The trend indicates a slow market update, but old stocks still play an important role in sales.
