The assembly of the pulsed magnetic system for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in the commune of Saint-Paul-lez-Durance in France has been completed. The work was carried out with the active participation of Rosatom.
The ITER magnetic system consists of toroidal (with a ring core) and poloidal magnetic field coils (consisting of eight superconducting double-layer, double-pass pancakes), correction coils, and a central solenoid (heats and stabilizes the plasma). It is the largest superconducting system in the world. When assembled, it will weigh almost 3000 tons.
Anatoly Krasilnikov, Director of the ITER Project Center (part of Rosatom), stated that the production of superconducting coils is a grand achievement of the world community. And Russia took a direct part in this process, he emphasized.
We produced 120 tons of niobium-titanium superconductor, as well as more than 17 km of niobium-tin superconductor. We also manufactured and delivered one of the six poloidal field coils to the ITER Organization.
