The company "Information Satellite Systems" named after academician M. F. Reshetnev" (part of Roscosmos) has developed a mobile radiation therapy complex (MRTC). An experienced model was presented at a meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).
MRTC is designed for intraoperative (performed during surgery) treatment of cancer patients. The developers used the technology of a small-sized betatron (a cyclic electron accelerator, which is a high-energy source of X-ray radiation). For accurate positioning of the betatron, Reshetnev employees used a special system with video cameras and laser rangefinders.
Two prototypes of MRTC were manufactured in cooperation with Tomsk Polytechnic University. After test operation, Reshetnev employees will establish small-scale production of equipment at the enterprise in Zheleznogorsk.
