Powerful magnetic storms to hit Earth this weekend: peak activity expected on Sunday morning

A G3-level storm is predicted for Sunday, which may affect weather-sensitive people

This weekend, Earth continues to be affected by a series of magnetic storms caused by solar activity. The most severe disturbances are predicted for Sunday, March 23, from 3:00 to 6:00 Moscow time. The intensity may reach level G3 (strong storm) — such events were last observed in January 2024.

On Saturday, March 22, after a peak at 5:00 am, when a level of G1.67 was recorded, the geomagnetic situation began to gradually stabilize. However, by the evening, the situation worsened again due to the approach of a plasma cloud ejected by the Sun on March 21. This ejection occurred after an M1.2 class flare, which, despite its moderate strength, triggered the separation of a large prominence — a dense plasma filament. The cloud is moving at a record speed for this year, and its complex structure, including several layers, will enhance the impact on the magnetosphere.

Strong G3-level magnetic storms can cause headaches, fatigue, blood pressure fluctuations, insomnia, or, conversely, drowsiness in weather-sensitive people. During peak activity hours, from 3:00 to 10:00 Moscow time, it is recommended to avoid physical and emotional stress, drink more water, and limit the consumption of coffee and alcohol. If symptoms are severe, you should consult a doctor.

After March 23, the magnetosphere will begin to recover, but some disturbances may persist until Monday. The next powerful storms are likely in 1–2 months, depending on solar activity. Scientists continue to monitor the behavior of the Sun to refine forecasts, and in the meantime, advise monitoring your well-being and taking precautions during geomagnetic fluctuations.

The IKI RAN reported that in Moscow on the night of March 24, auroras are possible due to a G3 category magnetic storm. If the storm lasts until Sunday evening, the probability of auroras in the capital region will remain.
