Kurchatov NPP-2 Receives License to Site Nuclear Facility for Power Unit No. 4

Obtaining the license confirms that the project meets all requirements and standards for the safe use of atomic energy

Rostekhnadzor has issued a license for the siting of a nuclear facility for power unit No. 4 with a VVER-TOI reactor. This was reported by the press service of Rosenergoatom Concern.

This is a significant step that demonstrates that the project meets all necessary safety standards. It makes it possible to start preparatory work immediately for two power units of the second stage of the replacement station — Nos. 3 and 4.

In early March, the Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision (Rostekhnadzor) gave permission to site a nuclear facility with a VVER-TOI reactor at power unit No. 3 of Kurchatov NPP-2.

Obtaining the license confirms the project's compliance with Russian norms and rules in the field of atomic energy use and indicates the site's readiness for the placement of a nuclear facility. Modern technological solutions of the project cover all aspects of safety during the entire period of operation of the power unit.
Alexander Uvakin, Director of Kurchatov NPP

The Kurchatov nuclear power plant is located in the immediate vicinity of the city of Kurchatov, located in the Kurchatov Region. It plays a key role in the operation of the Unified Energy System of Russia.

Kurchatov NPP accounts for 35% of the total installed capacity of all power plants in the Black Earth Region. It provides electricity to more than 90% of industrial enterprises in the Kurchatov Region.

In order to maintain and develop the production of electricity and heat in accordance with the document «Scheme of territorial planning of the Russian Federation in the field of energy» approved in November 2013 by the Government of the Russian Federation, the construction of a replacement station — Kurchatov NPP-2 with new VVER-TOI reactors (water-water power reactor — typical optimized computerized generation III+) began.

Kurchatov NPP-2 is part of a large-scale plan for the development of nuclear energy in Russia. After the completion of construction and commissioning, each of the reactors will operate in normal mode, providing annual electricity generation and heat supply to consumers for 60 years.

In October 2024, the fourth power unit was restarted at Kurchatov NPP. Specialists have improved the key systems of the reactor and increased the reliability of the equipment.
