One of the most outdated energy systems in the world operates in Russia. Its average age is 39 years. It has reached the limit of its capabilities. This was stated by Mikhail Rasstrigin, First Vice President of the "Center for Strategic Research" Foundation.
According to him, serious accidents have already occurred: incidents in the south of the country and in Primorye. Deep updates and modernization of the system are necessary. The expert said that the authorities plan to invest approximately 42.6 trillion rubles per year until 2042 to update generating capacity and modernize power grids.
Rasstrigin emphasizes that the energy sector does not have its own capital for modernization projects. He explained that electricity prices do not allow attracting and recouping the necessary investments.
The annual revenue of the electric power industry is about 5.5 trillion rubles, and the net profit is estimated at about 500 billion rubles. Two major investment cycles need to be carried out by 2042. The expert explained that within two years, energy companies need to invest about 15 trillion rubles out of the planned 42.6 trillion rubles. This will require 4 to 6 trillion rubles of equity to attract loans.
