The floating nuclear heat and power plant (FNPP) in Chukotka, developed by the Rosenergoatom concern (part of Rosatom), has generated its first billion kilowatt-hours of electricity for the isolated network of the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub. This amount of electricity is enough to provide every inhabitant of the Earth with a cup of double espresso.
Currently, the nuclear heat and power plant provides more than 60% of electricity generation in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub, which covers western Chukotka and the village of Chersky in Yakutia.
In 2025, the FNPP will celebrate its first anniversary — five years since its commissioning. In May 2020, the station received positive conclusions from Rosprirodnadzor and Rostekhnadzor, which allowed it to begin its work. This is the world's first commercial floating nuclear power plant.
The past year has been a landmark for the FNPP — we successfully completed the first fuel campaign in the station's history. Working in the Arctic conditions is a serious challenge, and we coped with it thanks to effective planning and the coordinated work of all personnel.
One of the key tasks of the FNPP is to provide an energy base for the deployment of mining at the main deposits of the Baimskaya ore zone. Among the consumers of electricity from the FNPP is the largest deposit, "Peschanka." It will become the basis for the Baimsky Mining and Processing Plant.
